Welcome back to day 18 of our Craft Room Organization Challenge.
Yesterday we determined if we needed more bins and boxes. I definitely did.
But not all storage needs to be or should be things we put away in drawers or boxes. In fact, there’s a lot of good reason to keep some things out. Things we use on a regular basis should be more accessible, not shoved away in a box. And things that are pleasing to look at can be out as well, because they may make us smile, inspire us, or just make our craft spaces look more appealing.
Great examples of things I like to keep out include:
- Frequently-used tools
- Cute tools (like my Cricut tools)
- Paint bottles (because of the rainbow colors)
- Washi tape and ribbon (again, because of the pretty colors and textures)
- Wrapping paper and fabric (nice to look at and bulky to store)
- Thread (rainbow colors and more easily accessible)
- Markers
Anything you have that looks attractive and/or needs to be handy is a candidate to store on the wall! But how do you store these things on the wall? Let’s talk about options!
Challenge 18: Wall Storage
The most obvious wall storage is simply shelves attached to a wall rather than the floor or another unit. Technically this might fall under our shelves and drawer category, but it bears mentioning here as well. Wall shelves range from everything from simple boards and brackets to cute cubbies mounted on the wall.
Another great storage method is the pegboard! You can hang tools from a pegboard, sure, but you can also hang little cups and shelves and boxes, too! Get a nice big pegboard, paint in a color that complements your craft space (like white or baby blue) and hang it up on the wall to keep everything handy. I plan to put a big pegboard in my craft room!
Check out my Ultimate Pegboard Organization Guide for more ideas on how to use pegboards, how to mount them to your wall (for a frame), and what accessories you can put on them!
Ribbon and washi tape can be put on rods or dowels, and then mounted up on the wall. This not only keeps your spools accessible, but looks cute, too. I’ll be putting up all my ribbons on a dowel.
Colorful paint bottles can be displayed on walls as well—I love all of their rainbow hues. You can buy spice racks for your paints, or how about putting them on their sides (with just the bottom showing) in round tins or cut-off PVC tubes? This is the plan I have for my paints!
Vinyl rolls can be stored on the wall, too. IKEA sells an awesome plastic bag holder that happens to store vinyl rolls really well. The holders even come with mounts to put right up on the wall.
Finally, big and bulky items like wrapping paper and fabric can be draped on rods or dowels mounted to the wall for easy access, too.
Day 18 Assignment: Decide what wall storage you need to get your items up, out, and visible. If you find some great wall storage, or come up with a cool idea to store things on the wall, take a picture and share it on Facebook. If you have a plan for something, draw it out or find a photo of something similar and share it with us.
Until tomorrow,
