Welcome back to day 29 of our Craft Room Organization Challenge.

Back when I first began to plan my ultimate craft room, I made a lot of visits to the IKEA furniture store. As you probably know by now, most of the furniture, and my craft table, are all made from various IKEA pieces. On one of my visits, I saw a small rolled cart with three shelves available for sale. I wasn’t even on the display floor at this point — I was in the warehouse getting the items on my shopping list. But this cart was right there, and oh so inexpensive, and I couldn’t resist. I impulsively bought a rolling cart.

So what happened to that cart?

For a while, it just sat in a box. I hadn’t actually had a purpose for it, after all! But eventually I took it out, painted it to match my craft room, and assembled it. I envisioned I’d use it as a sort of mobile craft organizer, but in fact, it has taken on a completely different role in my room. And it turns out it’s perfect for keeping my craft room organized.

So let’s talk about how that cheap little cart became one of my favorite things in my craft room …

Challenge 29: Create a Mobile Catch-All Station

As we use our craft spaces, things get moved about. Rulers, scissors, paint, paper, bottles, paper towels, tape, etc. Hopefully all of these thing have homes, and we’re putting them back where they belong when we’re done. But the truth is that they don’t go back right away, do they? We keep them out because we know we’ll use them again soon. More little things like this collect in our rooms, too. Sometimes things leave the room and get put back in by someone other than us. Sometimes we buy or acquire new things.

You need to create a dedicated catch-all space for these! My solution is a rolling organizer cart. I place it right at the entrance to my craft room. I see it on the way in and the way out. So when I’m working and trying to keep things tidy, or when I tidy up at the end of the day, I put little things in this cart. When I come in from the craft store with more finds, I can put them in the cart. When I find something that I’m not sure where it goes yet, I can put it in the cart. And then when I’m ready to put those items away, I can just wheel the cart around the room with me.

I LOVE my catch-all cart!

If you want your own cart and don’t already have one, you can get the IKEA RASKOG cart, but you don’t have to. They’ve become so popular there is an inexpensive version of this cart at Target now, too!

Here is my cart, painted to match my craft room in light turquoise blue and copper. If you’d like to see how I painted and decorated my cart, check out my craft cart tutorial here.

You don’t have to use a rolling cart like this, of course, but I do recommend a catch-all station. It works wonders!
