Welcome back to day 12 of our Craft Room Organization Challenge.

Yesterday we took a really close look at our craft table and any other work surface we have in our craft space. I realized what I have was no longer meeting my needs.

It’s time to turn our attention to that craft room furniture that seems to get all the attention — the STORAGE furniture! We always need places to keep our stuff, now don’t we? I know I do. In fact, I think furniture that stores things is my all-time favorite kind of furniture. There’s something about all those shelves and drawers that really gets me excited.

I am not kidding!

But seriously — we need places to put things in our craft spaces! Let’s assess our storage and see how it measures up.

Challenge 12: Units of Storage

If you have any storage units currently, make a list of it. Ask yourself these questions:

1. Is this enough space for me to store my craft supplies, tools, and any projects I want to keep in here?

2. Is the storage the right size for what I need to store? (I.e., if you need to store large items, will they fit in your current storage?)

3. Does the storage fit in with how you want your craft room to look?

If you answered “no” to any of these questions, you’re going to want to consider finding or making new storage furniture. We’re going to talk about what you can make, find, or buy next week.

In my case, I have two huge built-in, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, plus my Paper Tower of Power that I built recently (It’s an IKEA hack — check out the full tutorial here). And while those bookshelves are awesome, they are not the right size for the things I need to store. I have some very large sheets of paper and mat board that need large drawers or slots somewhere. I’d also like some things to be “behind closed doors,” so I need some storage that I can either put doors on or slide cubes into. I’m definitely in the “don’t have enough storage” category.

How about you?

Day 12 Assignment: Assess your storage units. Is it everything you want, or is it lacking? If you feel like sharing, take a photo of your work surface and share it on Facebook — your photos inspire us all.

Until tomorrow,
