Welcome back to day 27 of our Craft Room Organization Challenge.

I recently worked on a large project in my new and improved craft room. It was a JOY to have all that extra space to spread out and work in. But after about an hour or so, you know what happened? My lovely and HUGE craft table was covered with scraps of pumpkin-orange fleece and bits of fluff. It was everywhere!

So, I dutifully got a trash bag out of my cleaning closet (which is thankfully nearby) and began cleaning up. I nearly filled up that bag with fabric scraps.

Then it hit me — if I’d had a nice big trash can, I could have been putting all of these scraps right into the can instead of letting them lay about my table like tourists on a beach.

I looked over at my trash can, which was overflowing with scraps from my last project. It was woefully small, maybe only 12″ tall. A trash can like this is fine for some people, but clearly not for an active craft room.

So let’s talk TRASH!

Challenge 27: Get a Bigger Can

This may sound silly, but a bigger trashcan is trick I learned LONG ago when I worked in a print shop. We had a gigantic trash can in our little shop—it was one of those industrial ones you see in schools. It was SO easy to use, and as a result, we used it all the time. We rarely left things lying about because it was just so easy to put it in the trash can.

Now I know trash cans are hardly the cutest thing, but a craft room covered in scraps isn’t cute either.

Another awesome thing about having a bigger trashcan is that it prevents trash overflow. No one likes a stuffed trash can!

I recommend you get the biggest trash can you can fit in your room. Maybe more than one! I now have THREE trash cans in my room — the two biggest ones are behind the built-in doors in my DIY craft table, so my room still looks “cute.” The third one is centrally placed but going toward the exit to my room so I can drop things in easily. I am thinking about getting another one, too!

Here is one of the trash cans I put behind my craft table doors. It looks deceptively small here, probably because my craft table is so massive. This is a 44 qt. (11 gallon) trash can from IKEA called FILUR—I got it because I liked the lift top lid and it fit perfectly behind my craft table doors.

And don’t forget to recycle when you can!

Day 27 Assignment: Determine if your trash can is big enough, and if not, go get a much bigger one. You can thank me later!

Until tomorrow,
