These foiled gift box designs are made to fit coffee mugs and tumblers, but you can use them for any small gifts. Special cardstock like glitter or foil works well for the sides, but stick to plain, textured cardstock for pieces you want to foil.
The tall box fits a 20 oz. skinny tumbler just right! And the 3D decorations I’ve included add a fun special touch.
And the square boxes are perfect for coffee cups.
There are many colors of foil available, so you can pick your favorite, use one to complement the colors of boxes you have in mind, or get inspiration from gift wrapping paper
When you’re ready to wrap, add a little tissue paper inside the box, pop your present in, and you’re ready to go for your birthday party, baby shower, bridal shower, or any other special occasions!

Answers to Your Questions About My Foiled Gift Box Tutorial
Q: Where is your tutorial for this project?
A: This is a special project we made for our free Maker Academy Weekend 2024 event! A complete and detailed step-by-step video premiered during the event November 7-10, 2024. You can get access to the video tutorial and printable handbook that details how to make this great project if you get a 2024 VIP Pass to Maker Academy Weekend or by joining the ADVANCE with JenniferMaker program (as an ANNUAL/yearly member) which comes with other perks and bonuses, too!
Q: What does the foil option on Cricut do?
A: The foil kit allows you to create foiled effects on base materials like cardstock. It has three applicators of different widths, so you can add different thicknesses of foil. Make sure you get the right kit, because the Joy has a different version!
Q: Does the Cricut foil tool use heat?
A: No, the Cricut foil kit is pressure-activated instead of using heat.
Q: What can you make with foil transfer on Cricut?
A: The foil transfer sheets can be applied to cardstock, faux leather, and more. But keep in mind, smoother surfaces will take the foil easier.
Q: Can you reuse Cricut foil transfer sheets?
A: If your foil transfer sheet has been used, it might get wrinkly and pressed out of shape by the tool. You can carefully cut away the used sections and try using clean pieces for small projects, though.
Q: Why is my foil not transferring on Cricut?
A: Using the kit’s included tape to make sure the foil transfer sheet is taut and secure on the cardstock is the first step to improving your transfer.
Q: Why does my Cricut foil keep tearing?
A: Your pressure might be too high, or the sheet may be pulled too taut, or even too loose, which makes the tool drag the material. Re-check your settings and process, then try again!
Q: What paper is best for foil transfer?
A: I prefer the lightly textured plain cardstock in my material list for use with the foil kit.
Q: Can you tell me what tape to use for Cricut foil?
A: Use the special tape included with the Cricut foil transfer kit instead of other types of tape. The included kind is gentle on the foil sheets and can be reused carefully.
Q: Do you have any other gift box projects I can make?
A: You can even add foiled details to many of these, too!
Q: I don’t have a foiling kit, can I use something else?
A: Yes you can use one of the Cricut pens by changing the operation to Pen instead of using the Foil operation.
Q: What temperature is the gun?
A: The Cricut Glue Gun reaches a maximum internal temperature of 356°F (180°C)
Q: Can you make the 3D tops without using the foil transfer paper?
A: Yes – you can delete the foil designs to make just the tops or flower add-ons.
Q: Is the Cricut glue gun good for precise gluing?
A: Yes, the Cricut Glue Gun is good for precise gluing, thanks to its fine-point nozzle, ergonomic grip, anti-drip feature, and quick heating
Q: What is a scoring tool?
A: A scoring tool is a tool that makes grooves into your material. It can be a wheel or a stylus with the Cricut machines.
Q: Does the Bearly glue work if I don’t want to use a glue gun on the glitter card stock?
A: The particular glitter cardstock I used didn’t work well with regular glue because the glitter came away from the paper and kept the glue from holding. Other styles of glitter paper may work differently.
Q: Can I use washi tape to hold the foil down?
A: Yes, you can use tape with a light adhesive, such as washi tape, painter’s tape, or masking tape to hold the foil down.
Q: Can you use kraft cardstock?
A: Kraft cardstock is heavier so it should work. But be prepared for folds to be a little more difficult if the cardstock is very heavy.
Q: Can you foil on top of foil cardstock like gold on silver?
A: Foil transfer works better on cardstock with some texture because the foil needs a surface it can adhere well to. I haven’t tried foil on foil cardstock, but I can guess that it won’t transfer well due to the very smooth surface of the foil cardstock.
Q: What is the recommended pressure to use when using foil?
A: I always recommend using “More Pressure”. Foiling typically works best on cardstock with a little bit of texture, so if your foil isn’t transferring well, it may be the cardstock you are using.
Q: What size is the tumbler box?
A: The assembled tumbler box is 3.25″ x 8.875″ x 3.25″ . A 20 oz tumbler will fit inside.
Q: What size is the mug box and what size mug does it hold?
A: The assembled mug box is 5″ x 4.75″ x 3.75″ and holds a 15 oz mug.
Q: I have a scoring stylus but is it easier to fold with dash lines?
A: I would say both are fairly easy to fold.
Q: Can you use double stick tape?
A: You can use craft strength double sided tape on materials that will accept the tape adhesive on both sides of the material. We do use double sided tape in this project.
Q: Can I run the foil design a second time reusing the foil?
A: No, the foil is more likely to tear.
Q: Can I foil using the Cricut app?
A: As of November 2024, the foil transfer kit requires Cricut Design Space for desktop and is not compatible with the phone or tablet apps for iOS or Android.
Q: How do I know if my design uploaded at the correct size?
A: If you are using Cricut Design Space Beta for Desktop, try switching to the Live version as this has sometimes worked in our testing, or use the stacked version of the design and ungroup it to spread the pieces out. Here are the dimensions you should see for each design on your Canvas:
- foiled-gift-box-bow-rectangle-jennifermaker-SVG: 7.7″ x 5.75″
