I’ve made many decorated coffee and tea mugs lots of different ways over the years, but these super cute shaped edge mugs take the cake — the coffee cake! They’re perfect for a morning coffee or hot chocolate for yourself, but a mug always makes a great gift, too.
My free designs have negative space cutaways on either side of the handle, so you can see the classic shape options from both directions. There are versions made to fit both sizes of the Cricut sublimation mugs, so just make sure you pick the correct one!
Sublimation has become one of my favorite crafts, but not everyone has a sublimation printer. Luckily, you can get the look and durability of high quality sublimation printing without a printer by using infusible ink transfer sheets. And what’s the best part? They’re easy to cut with a Cricut cutting machine!
But, can you use any regular mug for Infusible Ink? No, you can’t. It’s important to use a white ceramic mug with a sublimation surface so the colors from the Infusible Ink transfer sheets become permanent on the cups. A handmade ceramic mug or a plain mug from Dollar Tree won’t have the correct sublimation surface, unfortunately. Those are good for other projects, though!
Once we’ve cut the Infusible Ink and prepared the mug, I’ll show you just how easy the sublimation process can be with a Cricut Mug Press. You don’t even have to watch the time or set a temperature, because the Mug Press does it for you!
Once you have the right tools and materials, making shaped edge mugs is easy! To make things even easier, I’ve included a list of things you’ll need below, with links where to find them. So get your favorite drink ready and let’s make the perfect gift for any true hot beverage lover!

Answers to Your Questions About Making A Shaped Edge Mug
Q: Where is your tutorial for this project?
A: This is a special project we made for our free Maker Academy Weekend 2024 event! A complete and detailed step-by-step video premiered during the event November 7-10, 2024. You can get access to the video tutorial and printable handbook that details how to make this great project if you get a 2024 VIP Pass to Maker Academy Weekend or by joining the ADVANCE with JenniferMaker program as an ANNUAL member which comes with other perks and bonuses, too!
Q: Does Infusible Ink work on Dollar Tree mugs?
A: No, you must use Infusible Ink on specially-coated mugs that are designed for sublimation.
Q: Do I need to mirror Infusible Ink for a mug?
A: Yes, but watch your screen because the latest version of Design Space might mirror the design automatically.
Q: Can you turn a regular mug into a sublimation mug?
A: There are sublimation-friendly coatings you can add to a mug, but it’s much easier and more efficient to use a sublimation-ready mug. That means you probably can’t sublimate a unique stoneware coffee mug, but you could add a desert canyons design to a fitting mug as another take on the theme!
Q: Are Cricut Infusible Ink mugs dishwasher safe?
A: Yes, and they are also microwave safe, too! If you order supplies online, check the seller’s delivery times. Depending on the amount sellers are shipping, some items can take a while to arrive.
Q: Can you tell me how long and at what temperature to sublimate a mug?
A: If you use the Cricut MugPress like I did, the machine will determine the best temperature and time, taking your cup and room into account!
Q: Is sublimation permanent on mugs?
A: Yes, the sublimation ink infuses into the polymers, making the shaped edge mug design permanent.
Q: How can I gift a mug?
A: Find out your loved one’s favorite drink (cocoa, loose leaf tea, organic coffee, etc) and place some inside the mug with the original packaging so they know how to prepare it — there are slight variations for different drinks! Then place the mug in a sturdy gift bag or box surrounded by tissue paper in case of damage during transit. Your friend will soon be sipping like they’re visiting stylish cafes, but at home thanks to the appreciated gift!
Q: How long does it take to sublimate a mug in a Cricut mug press?
A: The average press time of these mugs in a Cricut mug press is six minutes, but it varies depending on the room and mug temperature. The press is so smart, it adjusts the heat to take both into account for the best results!
Q: How do I know if my design uploaded at the correct size?
A: If you are using Cricut Design Space Beta for Desktop, try switching to the Live version as this has sometimes worked in our testing, or use the stacked version of the design and ungroup it to spread the pieces out. Here are the dimensions you should see for each design on your Canvas:
- shaped-edge-mug-angel-jennifermaker-SVG: 10.625″ x 8.189″
- shaped-edge-mug-snowflake-jennifermaker-SVG: 10.625″ x 8.193″
