Need more storage but lacking space for it? You can use simple over the door storage — shoe holders! — to organize SO many things in SO many places!

One of my best ever life hacks is really simple — save space and organize your stuff with cheap over the door shoe holders. Yes, you read that right! You’d be amazed at how many things you can store in those simple little pockets. And this over the door storage is not just for doors, either. You can put this storage anywhere you can hang one — like the side of my paper storage tower!

EASY: If you don’t have a lot of time to mess about, an over the door shoe holder is really easy. In fact,  I just used this storage idea in my new camper! I got a new-to-me hybrid camper trailer last month and we brought it up completely empty, to keep its weight low on our first outing. So when we got here and I stocked up on various supplies, I also bought an inexpensive over the door shoe holder and put it over the bathroom door. It took less than a minute to do. And you can find these over the door shoe holders inexpensively at any Wal-Mart, Target, and most dollar stores.

VERTICAL: One of the things I love about using over the door shoe holders is that they take virtually no space, because it’s all vertical. So you can use any flat and vertical surface — a door (outside or inside) or a wall. You could even string them on some sturdy rope if you have no wall or door.

VISIBLE: Another advantage to using an over the door shoe holder to store things is that they are super VISIBLE! You can easily see all of your things, and this makes it easy to find them.

  1. We just bought a travel trailer too and I’ve been organizing and stocking it to make camping prep fast and easy. I wanted to do a storage system like this too but unfortunately, I think the way our bathroom door is made, it’s not going to work over the top. There’s no clearance to put anything on the top; I don’t think it will shut with anything over the top of the door. I’m bummed! I love the idea of using the shoe organizers in other spaces like your craft room too – I have only really ever thought of it in a pantry or kitchen space or something like a camper, but you’re right. It has so many applications in a craft space too. Now I’m looking around my craft room like hmm…. where could I use one of these?!

    1. Command hooks work very well to hold these pocket organizers. I have several on doors inside of a closet (linen closet) and one on back of my sewing studio door. Just make sure you buy hooks that will fit holes at top and that are rated for the weight of items you will store. My daughter in law has one inside their coat closet door for hats, mittens, other stuff kids need .
