Make a bobble head card and send laughs through the mail!
Ready for a chuckle? I’ve made some amusing cards before, but today I’ll show you how to make something extra fun: a bobble head card! These greeting cards are cute — especially the custom versions using a photo of someone’s face! We’ll use nothing but photo paper, cardstock, glue, and a special element to make your bobble wobble. Without resizing, they fit in an A7 sized envelope you can make yourself! But how do we get the photo cut perfectly for the card? Let’s find out!
Bobblehead dolls are so cute, so I thought: “Wouldn’t they be fun turned into cards?” These aren’t your regular greeting card! They are super fun cards bound to bring smiles, especially with a loved one’s photo. And I’ll show you how to make the whole project using the Print then Cut feature on your Cricut!
Don’t want to use a photo? I’ll show you how to make adorable animal bobblehead cards, too!
To make your bobble head card, first you need some cardstock. I’ve got all the colors I used listed in my materials list, but you can use whichever colors you like of course — mix it up! Customize the fur color if you’re making the animal cards, or the clothes color and skin color if you’re making the person version.
If you want to make the custom version with a photo of somebody’s face, you’ll need some photo paper — for a higher quality result than regular paper or cardstock — and a color printer.
Next, you’ll need a way to cut your cardstock. I’m using the Cricut Maker 3, but you can also use the Cricut Maker, a Cricut Explore Series machine, the Cricut Venture, or even the Cricut Joy Xtra. If you’ve got a Cricut Joy, you can make the animal cards!
Besides a cutting machine, you’ll need a green StandardGrip Machine Mat and the usual Cricut tools like a Brayer, a Spatula, a Scraper, and a Weeding Tool. If you plan to use the scored version of the cards, you’ll need a Scoring Stylus or Single Scoring Wheel. Otherwise, you can use the no-score versions, which create dashed cut lines on which to fold your cardstock.
You’ll assemble everything with some good quality craft glue, like Bearly Art Precision Craft Glue, which is some of my favorite stuff on the planet! Plus, the finishing touch: a spring to make your bobble wobble. It’s not just any spring, so watch the video to see how it works!
I’ll show you how to get my digital designs and you can choose which SVG file you’d like to make. By the time you’re done with this tutorial, you’ll know how to make all of them!
If you’re making the custom version, choose a clear photo where the subject isn’t too small, or resizing it can make the image grainy or pixelated. A lighter, brighter color photo also works best. Choose a picture where the person’s hair color stands out from the background — that will make for easier editing, and keep the subject of the photo looking their best!
I can’t wait to show you how to make your own bobblehead cards! You can use them as invitations to a party or special event, make one as a birthday card, or send one to someone “just because.” They’re so much fun, and when stuffed with a gift card or some cash, they make a great, unique gift that’s sure to be a huge hit!

STEP 1: GET MY FREE MAKE A BOBBLE HEAD CARD DESIGNS
First, download my Bobble Head Card designs from my free library -- look for Design #546. Alternatively, you can use the Save This Project form near the top of this post and the design link will be emailed to you.
There are three designs in the folder: a fox, a cat, and a bobble head card design that you can customize with your own photograph using Print Then Cut in Cricut Design Space. I’ve also included a “score” version of each design that you can cut using a scoring tool, and a “no-score” version with dashed cut lines that only needs the Fine-Point Blade.
If you’d like to make the version with score lines using a scoring wheel or stylus, you can refer to my tutorial on Cricut Scoring to learn how to adjust the files.
In this tutorial, I will show you how to prepare and assemble the cat bobble head card, but you can also follow these steps to make the fox card. I will also show you how to customize the photo card with your own photo. Choose a photograph you’d like to feature and upload the SVG file you need to Design Space to get started.
TIP: If you’re not sure how to upload, go to jennifermaker.com/svgs to learn how to unzip and upload SVG files.

STEP 3: ASSEMBLE YOUR CAT BOBBLE HEAD CARD
- Fold the card piece in half, along the dashed or scored line.
- Grab the white window frame piece and apply glue to the back, making sure not to get the glue too close to the outside edges, and attach it to the yellow rectangle.
- Apply glue to the back of the assembled window frame and attach it to the front of the card, centered left to right, slightly closer to the top than the bottom.
- Take the green piece, apply glue to the backside, and attach it to the card beneath the window frame (with some space between the frame and the green shape).
- Take the light orange body piece, apply glue to the back, and attach it to the dark orange body piece. Align the two pieces to the left side and top.
- Take the white chest tuft piece and ensure that it is facing the correct direction. Refer to your Design Space Canvas if you need help determining which side is the front.

- Apply glue to the back side of the pink ear pieces and attach to the ears of the cat head.
- Apply glue to the back side of the whiskers/nose/tongue piece and attach it to the lower third of the assembled head.
- Apply glue to the back of the assembled eye pieces and attach them to the head above the whiskers.
- Remove the adhesive from the thin part of the bobble spring and attach it, centered, to the back of the assembled head.
- While holding the assembled head and spring firmly, remove the remaining adhesive backer from the bobble spring.
- Line the head up with the body on your card so it looks like it’s connected, and not covering up the entire body.

Answers to Your Questions About How to Make a Bobble Head Card
Q: What size envelope fits this card?
A: If you don’t resize the card, it fits perfectly into an A7 sized envelope you can make yourself!
Q: Can I make myself a bobblehead?
A: Choose a good photo that shows off your best likeness. You can even add little custom elements! Design small accessories and cut them from cardstock, add googly eyes, mix it up and use glitter or holographic cardstock. With some adjustments to the design, you can adjust the body pose of your bobblehead character, make a customized two-person couple bobbleheads card, wedding bobbleheads cards, kids bobbleheads cards, military bobbleheads cards, make cards for your groomsman & bridesmaid friends as part of their wedding party gifts, celebrity and music bobbleheads, even animal & pet bobble head cards! You could even make custom bobble head cards with your team’s mascot for work & office events or personalized advertising. The is no end to the possibilities for these super fun (and funny!) greeting cards.
Q: What is a custom bobblehead?
A: A custom bobblehead is typically a small figure or statue (or in this case, a card) with an oversized head that bobs and wiggles on a spring. I’ve seen them made from 3D printers, plastic, polymer clay, cardstock, and many more materials. They’re a fun gift and they’re made even more special with the option to make a custom bobble head of a loved one, a celebrity, custom family bobbleheads, or even make bobble head animal and pet cards!
You can use custom bobbleheads made from any materials as a cute decoration in your home, as wedding cake toppers, stuck to the dash in your car — or anywhere else you like.
Q: How do you make your own cards at home? Can you show me how to make my own cards?
A: Handmade custom cards are one of my favorite things to make with my Cricut machines. I have tons of card tutorials on my blog, and each one walks you through the project step-by-step. Most of my cards can be made on any Cricut cutting machine — including many that can be resized or adapted to work with the Cricut Joy and Joy Xtra machines. Your next step is to pick a tutorial and get started!
Q: Which Cricut is best for card making?
A: Most cards are small enough to be cut on any of the Cricut machines. With many card designs, the different Cricut models will result in virtually the same final product. A lower budget model like a Joy or Joy Xtra can make lots of cards! If you’re wanting to make larger cards, with more options like score lines, debossing, and foiling, a Maker or Maker 3 is a great option. Need more help deciding which Cricut is right for you? Check out my blog post: Which Cricut Should I Buy?
Q: Why is my Cricut not cutting accurately?
A: If your Cricut isn’t cutting accurately, chances are it needs calibrated. In this tutorial, I walk you through the steps on how to calibrate your Cricut in order to get the most accurate, precise cuts with Print then Cut projects.
Q: How often should I calibrate my Cricut?
A: Ideally you should calibrate your Cricut before the first time you use it. There’s no strict time frame beyond that for calibrating your Cricut, but you should do it pretty often — especially if you’re making Print then Cut projects frequently. Important note: the calibration process recently changed a bit, but you can see the different stages in this tutorial!
