Learn the simplest ways to download and upload fonts to Cricut Design Space in Windows, Mac, and iOS (iPad and iPhone)

When I released my Maker Penwriting Font for the Cricut Gift Tag tutorial, I suddenly got a lot of questions about HOW to upload fonts to Cricut. It’s not a difficult process, but if you don’t know how to do it, I know it can seem daunting. So I’ve created a step-by-step video that covers uploading fonts to Cricut for Windows, Mac, and iPad/iPhone (which I think will cover most of you).

You can watch my Complete Guide to Cricut Font Uploading video here:

Now I know not everyone likes to watch videos, so I’m going to explain how to upload fonts to Cricut here as well! Scroll down to the section that applies to you for the step-by-step directions.

Many thanks to the readers and viewers who requested I explain Cricut fonts (Marie A., Cindy E., Lucy D., Aurora M., Judith S., and Christina S.).  And don’t forget, you can suggest project ideas and receive bonus entries into our current giveaway!

Key concepts taught in the video tutorial include how to download fonts, how to unzip files, how to install fonts on Windows, Mac, and iOS, how to set fonts in Cricut Design Space, how to use letter spacing to make words look good, and how to weld words.

Step 1: Download a Font

First, download a font. I have a font you can download and use for this tutorial called Maker Penwriting font, and it’s created for writing with your pen on a Cricut (so it looks like real handwriting). You can download it from my free resource library (you can get a password for it by signing up for my newsletter at the bottom of this page).

Tip: I recommend you download fonts in the free Google Chrome browser, which also works great with Cricut Design Space. Get Google Chrome here.

If you’re on a Windows or Mac computer, pay attention to where your font downloads. If you’re using Google Chrome, it’s really easy because a little box appears in the lower left corner of your browser and you can click it to go right to it. So once it has downloaded, click the little arrow in that box and select Open.

This is what your download looks like in Google Chrome on Windows 10:

Step 2: Upload Your Font to Cricut Design Space

For this next step, you need to follow the directions for your specific computer or device, so click section that applies to you in the list below:

Step 2a: How to Upload Fonts to Cricut Design Space in Windows 10

If you click Open on your downloaded font in Google Chrome as instructed in Step 1, you’ll go right to the font folder in your Windows File Manager. If you do not, you may need to go look for the zip archive in your Downloads folder. If the zip archive is not opened for you, right-click the compressed zip folder, select Extract All from the contextual menu, and check the “Show extracted files when complete” option.

Now locate the font file inside the font folder (you may need to open a couple of folders to find it). Your font file will be either an OpenType Format (OTF) or a TrueType format (TTF).  Below you can see the Maker-Penwriting.otf font file. Double-click it!

Once you double-click the font file, an Installation window appears. Just click Install.

Congratulations! Your font is now installed.

Now, the trick to using it in Cricut Design Space is to be sure you RELOAD Design Space before you try to find the font. That usually means just clicking the refresh icon in your browser, like shown below (just be sure you save any work first):

Reload Cricut Design Space in order to load your new fonts and use them!

Once Cricut Design Space is reloaded, click the Text icon, type some text, click the Fonts menu, make sure the word “All” is highlighted, and type in the first few letters of the new font you uploaded — when your font appears, click it to apply it to your text!

And that’s it! It’s really quite simple once you know what to do.

Step 2C: How to Upload Fonts to Cricut Design Space in iOS 11 or higher on an iPad or iPhone

First, go to the app store and get a free app called iFont.  Once you’re in the app store, click on the Search button down at the bottom and type in iFont.  Click on the download icon.  After the app finishes downloading, click to open iFont.

Navigate to the the font file you want to use.  You can get my free Maker Penwriting font in my   free resource library (you can get a password for it by signing up for my newsletter at the bottom of this page).  Tap on the link for the font file.  You will get a screen showing Maker-Penwriting-Font.zip and below that you will have two options that are Open in “Files” and More.  Tap More, then tap Copy to iFont.

iFont should open with the Open Zip Archive screen.  You should then be directed back to iFont.  On the left you’ll see an option to Install the Maker Penwriting Regular font.  Tap Install button.  You’ll be guided through a series of menus.  Tap Allow.  Settings should open showing a window to Install Profile.  Tap Install.  You may be prompted for your device’s passcode.  You may have to tap install a couple more times to complete the process. You should see a screen that says Profile Installed.  Tap Done.  The font is now installed on your device.

Restart the Cricut Design Space app.  Click on text at the bottom.  Click on the All tab because the app defaults to Cricut tab.  Type in the name of the font you just installed.  Tap on it. You should now be back at the Canvas screen.  Type in text to see what it looks like.

  1. I just unpacked my Maker and wanted to tell you that you are a life saver. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
    God bless!

  2. I am having a problem with my downloaded fonts not previewing correctly in Design Space. I have contacted Customer Care, but they were no help. I cleared the cache, restarted my computer and rebooted the program, UGH!!!

    1. Hi there! Make sure when downloading fonts that you are downloading the .OTF file versus any others. Also, just because they may not preview correctly in your fonts list, they should still work when you are creating your design.

  3. This isn’t really uploading to DS is it? I would like the same fonts available across all my devises in DS (phone, computer, pad) without having to download and install the font onto each devise. Is there any way to actually upload a font to DS like we do images? so they are available no matter what computer I am using?

    1. No, Rebecca, the fonts are not uploading just to Design Space, they are uploading to your entire computer system. That’s why you need to upload the font to each of your devices. The good news is that once uploaded the font, you’ll be able to use your new font for all of the software on your computer where you can change fonts – word processing programs like Word, image editing programs like Photoshop, etc. 🙂
