Easy Felt Sachet Coasters

Share the love!

Imagine relaxing with a hot cup of tea in the evening as the sweet smell of lavender fills the room. The lavender isn’t from a candle (which you forgot to light anyway). It’s coming from the coaster under your cuppa tea. And it happens automatically as the hot mug heats the dried lavender in the cute coaster sachet under it. Yes, my friends, this is heaven! So for Day 17 of the MAKE IT MERRY: 25 Days of Maker Projects Christmas, I bring you a set of cute felt sachet coasters—use them under your hot mugs, or just toss ’em in your dresser drawers!

These felt sachets are so easy to make and don’t require any sewing at all! Just cut, fill, fold, and iron! I’m not kidding. The fusible web that is used to keep the design stuck to the netting also serves to fuse the edges of your sachet closed. It’s all really very neat and tidy.

Of course, if you like to sew or embroider you’re welcome to put a pretty stitch around the edges. While I, too, love to do this, I’ve got less than a week until Christmas and that’s just not happening right now. So I’m grateful for Wonder Under!

How to Make Your Felt Sachet Coasters

Step 1: Get the Sachet Coaster Designs

First, download Design #80 which are the patterns for my felt sachet coasters from my free resource library (you can get a password for it by signing up at the bottom of this page). I recommend you cut these coasters with a cutting machine like a Cricut. Upload the file to your design software.

Tip: If you’re not sure how to upload an SVG cut file to Cricut Design Space, watch this helpful video training series I made. If you’re on an iPhone or iPad, here’s how to download and upload SVG files to the Cricut Design Space app.

Step 2: Cut out your Wonder Under

Using scissors, cut your Wonder Under into 8.5″ x 4.5″ strips.

Step 3: Prepare and Cut Your Coasters

Following the directions that came with the Wonder Under, adhere it to your felt. Be sure to put the rough side of the Wonder Under against the felt. Trim off the extra felt so the felt and Wonder Under are the same size.

Cut out your felt according to my pattern. I cut mine out on the Cricut Maker—so easy and fast!

Cut out your tulle as well. They are just circles, but I cut this out on my Maker as well for accuracy.

Step 4: Assemble Your Coaster

Peel off the paper backing from your cut felt.

Place your felt right side down on your ironing surface and put the tulle circle over the cut side of the felt.

Put a small pile of dried flowers or rice in the center of the tulle. Spread it out so it covers the entire design underneath. Try to keep bits off the edges where there is no tulle.

Fold the felt over so it covers the tulle and smelly stuff.

Cover the folded felt with a damp pressing cloth.

Iron the EDGES of your folded felt following the directions on your Wonder Under.

Once all edges are ironed (double-check that no edges are unfused), place your felt sachet on the ironing surface right side up. Now press with your iron again just once for about 10 seconds. This will fuse the cut felt design to the tulle and keep everything flat and tidy. You do not want to over-iron at this stage, however, as you don’t want to cook your dried flowers/rice.

And that’s it! Put your sachet in a suitcase or keep it on your desk as a sweet-smelling coaster.
