Felt is a great material for ornaments, because you can cut it into different shapes, add details, and assemble it in several ways. Personally, I love adding little faces. How cute are these smiling peppermint candies and their tree friend? The top candy has a hand-sewn embroidery floss face and details, and the bottom has them drawn on using a Cricut and matching fine-point pen. I like them both, but which do you prefer? As with any craft that can be made with different methods, the best ways are the ones that work for you, so give them both a try and see for yourself!
Of course, one of the best things about these handmade pieces can be much more than Christmas tree decorations, too! They make a charming addition to gifts and stockings, and are the perfect decoration as holiday decor that needs a personal touch — like tree skirts or place cards! There is a whole host of ways you can use them — I love versatile crafts like these, don’t you?
I cut my felt ornament pieces from vibrant wool in several different colors. If you use a softer craft felt than what I’ve listed below, you’ll need to use the Rotary Blade on the Maker or Maker 3 to cut your pieces. I used a stiffer felt that worked well with the Fine-Point Blade when tested on both the Maker 3 and the Cricut Joy machines. Cutting machines are handy, powerful tools!
My digital files have details you can add to each design, but you can also use them as inspiration to make your unique handicrafts. I’ve included a stitch guide for different sewn details, or you can draw on the felt with a permanent marker.
And when it’s time to close up the ornaments, I’ll show you how to hand embroider or sew them, or glue them shut. You can see the different results best on my little gingerbread men and pick the process you prefer! Don’t forget the fiber fill to puff up your DIY ornaments and ribbon to hang the Christmas decorations!
Once you get started making felt Christmas ornaments, you might not want to stop! Good news! It’s easy to make a full delightful set — or more! — for perfect gifts to spread holiday cheer every Christmas season. With just a few craft supplies and my free pattern set, you can stitch them up in no time! Who knows, maybe someday your handmade felt Christmas ornaments will be among your family’s vintage treasures!

Q: What Christmas ornaments and decorations can I make with a Cricut?
A: I love making Christmas ornaments and decorations! Here are a few of my favorite projects!
Christmas stocking ornaments
Etched Glass ornaments
Animal ornaments
Advent calendars
Picture frame ornament
Something for Santa Claus
Q: What do you need to make felt ornaments?
A: You’ll need a way to cut the felt (the big pieces are pretty easy to cut by hand with scissors, but a cutting machine helps with small details, like felt circles for the tree’s ornaments), embroidery thread and a needle or a marker, glue, and ribbon to make felt ornaments. Use my easy to follow tutorial steps with the latest version of Cricut Design Space to learn how to transform the materials into adorable felt ornaments! You can even make made-to-order items for your family with their requested colors and details. Making one of a kind items is my favorite!
Q: Can a Cricut cut through felt? What Cricut blade is used to cut felt?
A: Yes, Cricut cutting machines can cut felt, but the details depend on your materials and machines. If your felt is pretty soft and closer to floppy fabric, the Rotary blade will work best in a Maker series machine. Stiffer felt can be cut with a fine-point blade in any of the Cricut machines.
Q: What is the best stuffing for felt ornaments?
A: I stuffed my felt Christmas ornaments with polyester fiber fill.
Q: Can you tell me what kind of felt to use for ornaments?
A: I prefer to use stiffer felt because I think it’s easier to cut and add sewn details on my Christmas ornaments. Make sure you check the details on the specific listing to make sure you’re purchasing stiff felt.
Q: What is the best stitch for felt ornaments?
A: My felt Christmas ornament project uses several embroidery stitches, but a straight stitch works well for details and a blanket stitch will keep the edges closed!
Q: How do you attach ribbon to felt ornaments?
A: I sewed or glued my hanging loop’s ends inside my Christmas ornament to keep it secure.
Q: How do you store felt Christmas ornaments?
A: To keep your DIY felt ornaments safe after holiday season, wrap them in clean tissue paper or coffee filters and put them in small boxes. Egg cartons work, too! Keep them in dry storage to avoid damage. If they’re real wool, put them in air-tight bins, safe from moths! With extraordinary care, these can last many Christmases to come.
